Christmas Party Decorations

Christmas party decorations turn a good time into a memorable event when you make decisions with love and care. From the holiday decor to the music playing in the background, to the fresh scent of evergreen or gingerbread cookies...plan your Christmas party decor and theme in advance so all will flow together. How beautiful is the natural, muted holiday tablescape above?

There are two simple methods for creating the foundation for your holiday party decor:

  • Use a Theme, or
  • Select a particular Color Palette for your Christmas party decorations

Your theme could be a particular figure or item that is identified with Christmas, such as angels, snowmen, Santa, reindeer, nativity, etc.

Or, you might decide to create your holiday event around a movie, such as It's a Wonderful LIfe, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer or White Christmas.

Selecting a holiday color palette for your Christmas party decorations is another way to create a memorable and festive atmosphere inside and outside of your home.

There are always the standard red and green of course, but think about what you already have on hand for holiday decor.

If much of your Christmas decoration material is gold and white, for example, consider using those colors for your party theme, or add one more color to them for a trio of holiday colors.

Christmas Party Decorations, Inside & Outside

Once you have selected the theme and/or color palette, here are some ideas and tips for you to create a festive holiday home for your party:

Start with the exterior of your home. How can you make the entrance and walkway festive and become part of your holiday decor?

  1. Lighting up the walkway with paper bag candles,
  2. small Christmas trees on the front porch with white lights,
  3. a dusting of 'snow' (if you live in the south where there is none),
  4. holiday music playing for guests as they approach your entry...all these are ways to create the holiday atmosphere before guests walk through the front door.

Use your selected figure/item to create your own memorable entrance.

The Front Entry Door itself is always a blank canvas waiting for adornment, and a holiday party is no exception.

If you're not sure what to do and want to maintain a level of sophistication, a safe choice is always a beautiful, fresh evergreen wreath. Or, a natural looking wreath that looks great and won't ever drop a pine needle works for me!

Your wreath does not need a great big red bow, either. Sprinkle some gold or silver glitter on it and enjoy the simple sparkle that it creates...just sayin'

  • Inside, make the Christmas tree a focal point of the Christmas party decor, and follow your chosen theme and color palette. The key is to tie everything together so your theme is consistent.
  • The dining table is another focal point for your holiday decor. In addition to the centerpiece, place a small gift at each place setting that is consistent with your theme.
  • Short on budget? Bake cookies that are in the shape of your selected theme and take the time to decorate them beautifully. Place each cookie on a color coordinated paper napkin that is then put on each guest's dinner plate.
  • Your gift does not have to be expensive to be memorable, it just has to come from the heart.
  • Place small holiday items in the areas that your guests will use or see, such as the powder room, entry way, coat room, kitchen, etc. Place them in groups of 2 or 3, and/or use filler around them such as small wreaths or garland.
  • Candles always create a beautiful holiday glow and can be placed in a number of different areas, just be sure that the flame does not come into contact with anything flammable. Use them in conjunction with your selected theme, as they will fit in with virtually any color scheme or holiday decor.
  • For example, if your theme revolves around snowmen, make sure there is a snowman (or two or three) in each of the areas mentioned above.Select a variety of materials, shapes, sizes and colors of snowmen to keep things interesting and eye-catching. From tiny snowman shaped candles to a 3 foot snowman that stands by the front entry, these are the things that make your home stand out and the Christmas party decorations memorable.

Your Christmas party decorations will be even more memorable if you include two other holiday traditions:

Holiday Music and Wonderful Scents

Whether based on your theme, decor or just what you enjoy, be sure to have some background sounds of the season playing for your guests. There is nothing like listening to traditional Christmas music to bring on the holiday spirit.

Same applies to wonderful holiday scents....fruits, cookies, bread, spices, fresh greens, etc.

Have fun planning your holiday festivities, remember the scents and sounds, and you'll have an evening to remember!
