Casually Graceful...Naturally Rustic

French Country Decor Tips

Decor in a French Country home embodies a colorful, casually graceful, naturally rustic, relaxed and welcoming environment. The photo above emphasizes the graceful and elegant interpretation of this style.

How can you create this unique and friendly decor in your home? Read on to find out how!

Founded in the Provence region of southeastern France, the decor called French Country is first of all colorful, with sunny yellow, golds, terracotta red, lavender, bright and dark greens and of course, French blue.

This color palette is mixed and matched on fabrics, accents and walls, creating a cheerful, friendly and welcoming home. Add to this bright and bold colors accents of black and gray, and you are on your way to creating a beautiful decor.

But there is much more to French Country style than color. Natural materials that are selected for floors, walls, furniture and case goods enhance the rustic charm.

You'll find rough plaster walls, natural wood or stone floors, beamed ceilings, iron accents throughout, and, don't be surprised to find a gracefully curved piece of furniture as well to offset the rustic tones of the other materials.

This decor style also presents a casually organized look, with each piece having a place as part of the entire look.

It's a loving blend of old and new, not cluttered or thrown together, including patterns and colors within the palette, iron and wood, rustic and elegant.

You can create beautiful and elegant decor in your home yet live with today's modern styles and conveniences. Here is an example.

We'll use the Kitchen/Dining area as our model. Gain inspiration from the descriptions and images found below  (I love looking at photos...how about you?  :)

We may  find:

  • a striking yet welcoming shade of medium gold on the walls,
  • black appliances,
  • colorful deep red counter tops,
  • tile or stone floors,
  • simple cabinetry in hickory or maple,
  • and an antique (or reproduction) rectangular dining set, large enough to seat ten or even twelve people.

The chandelier that hangs over the table is a rustic yet elegant iron, and there is a beautifully colorful area rug under the dining set to highlight the dining area.

Reproduction prints are on the walls depicting the beautiful southern French countryside. There is an abundance of sunshine streaming in through the windows that have their wood shutters wide open.

There may be natural woven baskets hanging, rush seats on the dining chairs, greenery tastefully present in the room, and colorfully mismatched dinnerware in selected colors from the overall palette.

It is casually elegant, colorful and definitely French Country decor!

I love the earthy tones of this Country French style Kitchen.

The contrast of the dark cabinets, bar stools and counter tops plays off of the cabinetry, floors and walls.

Of course there is an elegant scrolled chandelier above the island to be consistent with the styling.

This charming and rustic Kitchen could be located in a village in the French countryside, it's that authentic.

From the simple and functional cabinetry to the exposed wood beams on the ceiling, from the hanging bird cage to the elegant crystal chandelier and candlesticks...everything in this space speaks of the easy elegance of French Country Decor.

Rustic and welcoming, this Dining area uses natural elements to invite us to have a seat and enjoy the simplicity of the styling.

Exposed shelving, distressed wood finishes, tile floors and earth tones (with a bit of bright red accents) complete the French County look.

What better place to express your love for French Country style than in your Home Office?

I love how the rows of casually placed books add to the country french vibe of the space. And the pair of potted, blooming trees are absolutely charming.

Casually elegant with a bit of a rustic touch, I know I'd be inspired to creativity here!
