Small Log Homes & Cabins

Small Log Homes can beautiful, spacious and dramatic, and a great place for weekend retreat or year round living.

These homes are generally defined as log homes, or cabins, that have 2,000 square feet or less, and some say that any log home with less than 2,500 sq. feet is considered 'small'.

Our log home (we have since sold it and moved to Florida) shown below was 2,000 square feet with a finished lower level, and it was a very spacious and gracious home! The front-facing walkout gave the  home a much larger appearance from the exterior, although 2/3 of that space was living area, so we did gain over 1,200 sq.ft. by building the home this way.

We built numerous log homes that were smaller - between 1,500 and 2,000 square feet, and again, they were all very livable and beautiful!

Small log homes ideas and floor plans

An important consideration when building your small log home is the wall height, as this can give the look and feel of a larger room/home.

The wall heights in our Great Room you see below were 12 foot, rather than the standard 8 foot walls. BIG DIFFERENCE! If the additional cost fits your budget I would highly recommend adding 1-4 feet to your wall heights and going with a cathedral ceiling if your plan allows for that.

Another consideration when planning a small log home is to determine how you want to allocate the square footage.

Do you want your living/dining/kitchen area to be the most expansive, with the bedrooms of a more 'average' size? Does a grand and elegant log master suite top your list of must-haves?

Whatever is most important to you, make that decision up front. With a log home under 2,500 sq. ft. and interior log walls, the size of the rooms can be significantly affected.

Small Log Homes and Cabins

Let's take a look at a sampling of floor plans from America's Best House Plans. This will give you a good starting point in your search for a log home or cabin plan that will work for you.

Most log home companies will take a plan that you have selected and customize it for their particular construction process. And, every single client we built a custom home for, log or conventional, made their own changes to the floor plan they selected...before and during the construction process!

So keep that important factor in mind when studying these homes. If you love 90% of what you see in a home but need to tweak it here and there, it can most likely be done for you.

Plan #154-00001 774 sq.ft.

Cost effective and simple, with a rectangular shape, no frills, just a good old fashioned log cabin with a covered porch.

The first floor of this plan includes an open living/dining area, two bedrooms and a full bath.

The loft area can be left as is, or customize it to suit your lifestyle.
